FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Elle Scott scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 79th minute to cap a complete team win and a signature result for the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team as they shutout the Princeton Tigers 1-0 on Lessing Field. The victory is Fairfield's first-ever over the Tigers, a team that advanced to the Second Round in last year's NCAA Tournament. Goalkeeper
Katie Wright picked up her 13th career shutout while making four saves in net.
"I think it's a signature win for us," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "I told the team that it's been some time that we've had a signature result in the seven years that we've been here. We've had a few chances along the way to do something but never quite gotten over that hump. This is certainly something that can underline where we are as a team in our development. I think we did some good things but there are things we can do better. Obviously, we're happy but we have a quick turnaround as we are going back to conference play on Saturday."
With the win, the Stags (7-1) extend their winning streak to five-straight matches and also improve their winning streak at home to nine-straight dating back to last season. The nine-straight home wins is one shy of tying the program's all-time record.
The Stags enjoyed a complete team effort, stopping numerous Princeton opportunities including a 12-shot barrage in the second half.
The Fairfield defensive backline of
Caroline Kelly,
Meghan Carragher,
Kendall Patten and
Sam Erickson kept the Tigers' strikers at bay even though Princeton controlled the pace for the majority of the second half. The backline was helped by midfielders
Dana Nadda,
Allie Kirby, and
Reagan Klarmann who all made key defensive plays down the stretch.
The anchor of Fairfield's defensive effort, however, was Wright in net who made four saves in the shutout, none better than a diving stop in the 63rd minute off the foot of Drew Coomans, and the Princeton rebounded shot sailed high.
The Stags made five total saves on the night with Kelly clearing a shot off the line from Lily Bryant in the 19th minute.
Fairfield took only two of the 14 shots in the second half, but had the only one that mattered in the 79th minute.
Ashlyn Walsh sent a through ball up the field which was chased down by the speedy Scott. The graduate student made a touch past the keeper and converted her chance into the net for her third goal of the season and the 23rd of her career. She has now tallied 66 career points which places her eighth on the program's all-time list. Her eight game-winners also ties her for eighth in the program's record book.
Wright's 13 clean sheets places her seventh in the program's all-time list.
The Stags' five-match winning streak is tied for the ninth-longest in the nation while their nine-match winning streak at home is tied for the fourth-longest in Division I.
Fairfield will hit the road for the first time in nearly a month when they go to Niagara to face the Purple Eagles on Saturday at noon.
