Fairfield Fires Past Southeastern Louisiana for First Win of 2024

Maya Walker earns All-Tournament honors at the doTERRA Classic

PROVO, Utah – In a matchup of reigning conference champions, the defending MAAC Champion Fairfield University Volleyball knocked off 2023 Southland Champion Southeastern Louisiana (SLU) to close out action at the doTERRA Classic hosted by BYU. Maya Walker posted 13 kills (.619) and five blocks against the Lions, wrapping up All-Tournament Team honors. The Stags took the match by set scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20.
 
The Stags earn their first win of the season to improve to 1-2. SLU falls to 0-3. Both squads were defeated by High Point and #16 BYU in Friday action.
 
In today's match, Walker had 13 kills on 21 errorless swings to record her .619 hitting percentage. On the weekend, Walker hit .420 with 2.18 kills per set and put down nine blocks in 11 sets of work.
 
Allie Elliott added a dozen kills on .346 hitting and Mamie Krubally hit .350 en route to 10 finishers in the Saturday's win. As a unit, Fairfield hit .343 against SLU. Rounding out the balanced attack, Mikayla Haut hammered nine kills, Janna Schlageter posted eight and Emma Beretich had six.
 
The attack was run by the duo of Abby Jandro and Blakely Montgomery, who distributed 30 and 20 assists, respectively.
 
Defensively, Elliott posted 13 digs and Jandro had 10 as each Stag completed a double-double. Haut was just shy of double-double, logging a match-high 21 digs to go along with her nine kills. Kyla Berg pitched in 17 digs from the libero spot. In doing so, eclipsed Megan Theiller '18 for 12th on Fairfield's all-time list with 1,214 digs and counting in her career.
 
At the net, Walker had a hand in five of Fairfield's eight team blocks. Haut, Schlageter and Beretich each got a piece of three rejections, and Krubally notched a pair. In total, the Stags limited SLU to a .151 hitting percentage.
 
The Lions were led by 11 kills and 11 digs from Cicely Hidalgo.
 
Up next, Fairfield Volleyball opens the home portion of the schedule as Central Connecticut, Boston College and Binghamton come to Leo D. Mahoney Arena for the Fairfield Invitational from Sept. 5-7.
