Stags Drop First Two in Provo

Fairfield falls to High Point, #16 BYU

PROVO, Utah – Fairfield University Volleyball opened the 2024 season on Friday in Provo, Utah at the doTERRA Classic hosted by BYU. The Stags were on the short end of a pair of contests, dropping a 3-1 decision to reigning Big South Champion High Point and a 3-0 outing against #16 nationally-ranked BYU.
 
Defending MAAC Champion Fairfield begins its 2024 campaign at 0-2. High Point and BYU both stand at 2-0, as each squad defeated Southeastern Louisiana in addition to its win over the Stags.
 
Maya Walker and Janna Schlageter each had 11 kills in seven sets of work to pace the attack for the day, while Mikayla Haut put down 10 from the outside. Blakely Montgomery and Abby Jandro managed Fairfield's 6-2 configuration and posted 26 and 23 assists, respectively. Jandro also served up four aces.
 
Defensively, Jandro had 20 digs – including a double-double against High Point – and Kyla Berg registered 19. Walker and Haut each had four blocks for the Stags with Mamie Krubally chipping in three.
 
The Stags conclude the doTERRA Classic on Saturday at 6 PM (ET) against another 2023 NCAA postseason qualifier in Southeastern Louisiana, the defending champion of the Southland Conference.
 
High Point 3, Fairfield 1 (25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 13-25)
  • Mikayla Haut had eight kills on the outside, leading 10 Stags to record at least one finisher.
  • Maya Walker, Mamie Krubally and Janna Schlageter registered six kills apiece.
  • Harlan Wyche (3 kills, .429) and Katelyn Cook (2 kills, .667) each posted the first kills of their respective collegiate careers.
  • Blakely Montgomery and Abby Jandro shared setting duties and finished with 16 and 12 kills, respectively.
  • Jandro also recorded 13 digs to compile a double-double.
  • Kyla Berg led all Stags with 14 digs.
  • Haut and Walker each had a hand in three of the Stags' six team blocks.
  • Two-time AVCA All-America Honorable Mention and Big South Player of the Year Dylan Maberry had 14 kills and nine digs for High Point.
 
#16 BYU 3, Fairfield 0 (18-25, 17-25, 11-25)
  • Schlageter had five kills on .364 hitting (5-1-11).
  • Walker also finished with five kills, and Allie Elliott put down four.
  • Jandro neared her second double-double of the day with 11 assists and seven digs. She also landed three service aces against the Cougars.
  • BYU was paced by 16 kills from Claire Little. Alex Bower had a double-double from the setter spot with 41 assists and 10 digs.
  • The Cougars finished third in the Big XII and reached the NCAA Championship Second Round in 2023. They were tabbed for second in the Big XII in this fall's Preseason Poll.
