FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It seemed only fitting that on senior day,
Allie Bridgman stepped into the batter's box with a chance to provide the Fairfield University softball team with a walk-off win. And, Bridgman did just that.
With one out and a runner on third base, Bridgman sent a pitch to deep center field that allowed the winning run to cross home plate and provide the Stags with a 2-1 win over regular-season champion Marist College on the final day of the 2024 regular season.
Senior pitcher
Bailey Taylor earned the start in her final game as a Stag and tossed the first three innings of the afternoon. The Red Foxes opened the first inning with three straight hits that resulted in a single run and an early lead.
Taylor would not allow any more runs through her stint in the pitching circle, eventually yielding to freshman
Chela Kovar. The rookie pitched admirably over the next four innings, surrendering only one hit, walking one batter, and striking out five hitters to earn the victory.
The Stags were held hitless through the first four innings but finally found their way in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Quinn McGonigle came off the bench as a pinch hitter and collected the team's first hit to start the frame, an infield single between shortstop and third base. She would eventually score the tying run after two miscues by the Marist infield, putting the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning when Fairfield sent the top of the batting order to the plate.
Charli Warren was the first to step into the batter's box and she responded with a lead off triple to the left-center field fence, putting the deciding run in scoring position. After a ground out, Bridgman was next in line. The catcher drove a pitch that sent the centerfielder back a few steps before catching the fly ball, giving Warren ample time to cross the plate.
Fairfield finished the game with three hits with
Cara Kochakian being responsible for the third hit, a lead off single in the sixth inning. After the opening three Marist hits, the Red Foxes managed just one more hit for the rest of the game, a one-out infield single by outfielder Peyton Pusey.
In addition to her game-winning RBI, Bridgman enjoyed a solid afternoon behind the plate. The senior threw out two runners who attempted to steal a base. The first came in the opening inning at third base and the other at second base in the fifth inning.
