NEW YORK, N.Y. – For the fifth-straight full season, the Fairfield University Baseball team has collected 30 wins on the season as they tallied their 30th with a 5-4 victory at St. John's on Tuesday. Seven Stags picked up at least one hit while seven pitchers combined for the victory.
Matt Bucciero led the team with a pair of hits and drove in two runs, including what proved to be the winning single in the seventh. The sophomore plated the game's first run in the opening inning as he singled home
Matt Bergevin who started the rally with a two-out double.
After St. John's tied the game in their half of the first, the Stags (30-21) regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Tyler Kipp lined a single into right center to plate
Zach Selinger and
JP Kuczik lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
Fairfield would have to break another tied game in the seventh, and did so with a
Luke Nomura sacrifice fly and a Bucciero single past the infield to put the score at 5-3.
Blake Helmstetter anchored a seven-man staff as he was called on for the save in the ninth. He would pitch a scoreless frame, helped out by his defense with
Dean Ferrara making a sliding grab and throw to cut down the tying run from moving into scoring position.
On the mound
Emmett Tolis,
Bo Buckley,
Aidan Colagrande, and Helmstetter all fired scoreless innings with Buckley picking up the victory.
The Stags will look to continue the momentum when they close out the regular season and host in-state rivals Quinnipiac for a three-game series starting on Thursday at 3pm.
