McVeigh Shuts Down Siena; Stags Sweep Series to Stay in First Place Tie

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Baseball right-hander Colin McVeigh dominated the Siena Saints by striking out 12 through eight scoreless innings in leading the Stags to an 8-0 victory and a series sweep. McVeigh allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter in matching a career-high eight innings. Against conference opponents, McVeigh has maintained a 1.31 ERA with 57 strikeouts against just four walks.

With the win, the Stags move to 13-2 in conference play and stay in a first-place tie in the MAAC.

"It was a very good all-around game for pitching, clutch hitting, power hitting, and some really nice plays on defense," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "I'm really happy with the combined effort of pitching, defense, and hitting today and it gave us a good lead and a good win to close out the series."

McVeigh dominated throughout the entire game, striking out at least one batter in seven-straight innings and punching out 12 total. He struck out a pair in five frames including the sixth and seventh innings. He didn't allow a hit until a leadoff single in the fifth.

The Stags (23-20; 13-2 MAAC) gave the right-hander plenty of run support starting with a pair of runs in the fourth. Matt Bucciero launched the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his 12th homer of the season. Nick Sturino would follow with a long RBI double to right.

After getting to the Siena bullpen, Fairfield put up a five-spot in the seventh. Matt Bergevin drove in his seventh RBI of the series with a single to left. Bucciero added a run with a sacrifice fly, but the biggest hit came off the bat of Zach Selinger who launched a three-run homer to left to crack the game open at 7-0.

Eight different Stags recorded at least one hit with Dean Ferrara and Selinger leading the squad with a pair.

With his 12 strikeouts, McVeigh brings his career total to 213, moving into the top-5 in program history.

With the win, the Stags stay in a first-place tie with Niagara with their 13-2 conference mark.

Fairfield will have one midweek contest before hitting the road for back-to-back conference series. Fairfield will host Stony Brook on Tuesday at 1pm.
