Ferrara’s Cycle and Bucciero’s Three Homers Highlight Stags’ Offensive Explosion

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Dean Ferrara hit for the cycle in the first five innings and tied the program's single-game record with six hits while Matt Bucciero tied the school standard with three home runs as the Fairfield University Baseball team enjoyed an offensive explosion in their 24-13 victory over Mount St. Mary's to even the three-game series. The Stags pounded out 26 hits with eight student-athletes picking multiple hits. Additionally, the team blasted eight homers in the contest with three coming from Bucciero, two from Ethan Hibbard, while Ferrara, Luke Nomura, and Tyler Kipp all tallied one.

"It was a great offensive power day highlighted by Dean Ferrara hitting for cycle in his first four ABs and Matt Bucciero with three home runs," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "Pitching and defense yielded too many runs for most teams to win but the benefit of our runs scored made a good cushion for them to rely upon."

The Stags (18-19; 9-2 MAAC) scored six runs before ever recording an out. Ferrara would start his historic day early by doubling into the right center field gap on the very first pitch of the game. Nomura would drive him in with a single and Zach Selinger would reach on a hit by pitch. Hibbard had the first big fly for the Stags with a three-run shot to right center and Bucciero would follow with a two-run homer to right.

Fairfield would total 15 runs through the third and seventh innings while plating at least one in all of those frames. Ferrara and Nomura accounted for both runs in the third with back-to-back RBI singles.

Bucciero smacked a solo shot to right center in the fourth. The Stags would then hit four home runs in the span of two innings. Ferrara and Bucciero both left the yard in the fifth with Bucciero driving in three with his blast.

Nomura started the sixth inning scoring with a solo shot and Hibbard capped the home run barrage with his second of the game and his 16th of the season. Ferrara would cap his historic day with a two-run double to left center in the sixth.

Ferrara became just the third Stag in program history to notch six hits in a game as he went 6-for-7 while hitting for the cycle. He became the first Stag with a six-hit game since Jason Rago in 2009. His 13 total bases also tied him for the second most in a game in program history.

Bucciero became the fifth Stag in school history – and the second this season – to hit three home runs in a game. He now sits with 11 homers and 42 RBI this year.

Hibbard's two home runs brings his season total to 16 long balls and 55 RBI, with both totals being in the top-3 in a single season in program history.

Eight Stags tallied multiple hit games led by Ferrara's six. Kipp tallied four including his first career home run and Nomura added three.

The eight home runs is tied for the sixth most in a NCAA Division I game this season.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at noon.
