EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision in the series opener at Mount St. Mary's. Five different Stags tallied base hits and the Fairfield bullpen combined for four innings of scoreless relief.
The Stags tied the score in the top of the second after
Ethan Hibbard launched his MAAC leading 14th homer of the season to knot the game at 1-1.
Fairfield would threaten in the third and fourth innings by getting two runners on in both frames.
Paul Catalano and
Luke Nomura worked out walks in the third while
Zach Selinger and
Tyler Kipp both picked up hits in the fourth.
The Stags would not convert on those opportunities until the fifth when
Matt Bucciero drove in a pair with a two-run, two-out single with the bases loaded to give the Stags a 3-2 lead.
That would be one of the last base hits the Stags would get in the final four innings with only
TJ Schmalzle picking up a hit with a bunt single. Fairfield would go in order for the final three frames.
On the mound, the Fairfield relief core of
Jack Erbeck,
Peter Ostensen, and
Peter Phillips gave the Stags a chance to rally with four shutout innings while only allowing two base runners.
The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow at 1pm.
