Stags Get to .500 After Win Over Hofstra

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Ben Alekson went five strong innings and Dean Ferrara tallied his third-straight game with at least three hits as the Fairfield University Baseball team downed the Hofstra Pride 6-2 on Tuesday. With the win, the Stags even their overall record which now stands at 17-17.
 
The Stags never trailed in the game after putting up a pair of runs in the third. Luke Nomura had the first clutch hit for the squad as he lined a two-strike pitch down the left field line to plate the game's first run. Matt Bergevin would follow as he launched the first pitch he saw into centerfield, which brought home Ferrara and put the game at 2-0.
 
Fairfield would score two runs in the sixth and eighth innings, tallying eight hits along the way. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Zach Selinger flied a sacrifice fly into center and TJ Schmalzle forced in a run with a walk after a nine pitch at-bat.
 
The Stags would close out their scoring, and give the pitching more breathing room, with a pair of runs in the eighth. Paul Catalano lined a 3-2, two-out pitch up the middle to score one. Ferrara would plate the next run as he reached on an infield error.
 
Alekson gave the Stags five strong innings in earning his third win of the season. He allowed just one hit through the first four frames, before giving up his first and only run in the fifth.
 
Kevin Kell would be the first Stag in relief and tossed two hitless innings while striking out a pair. Chris DiFiore and Jack Erbeck combined for the final two stanzas for the Stags.
 
Ferrara led the team with three hits, his third-straight game picking up at least three base knocks. He has tallied 11 hits during that span. Matt Bucciero also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 showing.
 
The Stags will close out their 17-game homestand when they welcome in-state foe Yale to Cook Field tomorrow at 2pm.
