Stags Claim 2024 MAAC Women's Tennis Regular Season Crown

#1 Fairfield Will Face #4 Siena In MAAC Championship Semis On Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-The Fairfield University women's tennis team claimed the program's fifth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title, going undefeated in 2024 MAAC regular season play at 6-0, with an impressive 4-1 home win over the visiting Quinnipiac University Bobcats at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts on a beautiful mid-April afternoon.

Monday's victory by the red-hot Stags, who have won seven matches in a row to move to 10-8 overall, snaps a QU 16-match MAAC winning streak dating back to the spring of 2022 when Fairfield also prevailed over the Bobcats.

The hosts set the tone on Monday by taking the doubles point in heart-stopping fashion.  After a Bobcats' win at number two doubles and a 6-2 triumph by the Stags' number three flight duo of Laina Campos and Nicolette Loeffler, Fairfield's number one team of Sarah Liu and Maeve Cassidy roared back from being down 0-5 to emerge victorious,  7-6 (2).

The momentum of grabbing the doubles' point continued into singles action for Fairfield, as Nicolette Loeffler prevailed at number three, 6-1, 6-4.  Katarina Plumtree won at number two, 6-1, 7-5, and Maeve Cassidy clinched the regular season crown for the Stags with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at number six.

Monday's victory gave head coach Jeff Bricker his first regular season title in charge of the Stags' women's program, and he was ecstatic with his team's performance saying, "What a great fight from everyone today. The doubles point was huge as always and to come back from the 5-0 deficit was impressive. In singles, we came out with energy and battled on all six courts. I'm super happy for the team. They've worked hard all year. The job is not done though and they know we have to keep working hard. Winning the regular season title is a great accomplishment, and I'm very proud of them."

The top-seeded Stags will now take on the fourth-seeded Siena College Saints at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 in the semifinals of the 2024 MAAC Women's Tennis Championship that will be played in West Windsor, New Jersey at Mercer County Park Tennis Center.
