Stags Plate 19; Complete Sweep Against Saint Peter’s

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nine different Stags tallied a hit and eight drove in at least one run as the Fairfield University Baseball team exploded for 19 runs in a 19-2 victory over Saint Peter's to complete the series sweep. For the second-straight game, Dean Ferrara led the offense with four hits while also belting two home runs. Matt Bucciero and Zach Selinger picked up three hits a piece and combined for seven RBI. On the mound, Colin McVeigh, the reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Week, built on his performance with a six-inning showing allowing two runs and striking out nine.

"It was a good day of McVeigh getting ahead in counts," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "It was a good power day too with a lot of different guys in the lineup and it was good to see a good combination of that today."

The Stags (16-17; 8-1 MAAC) totaled nine extra base hits with a pair of homers from Ferrara and seven doubles.

Ferrara set the tone of the game as he lifted the second pitch of the contest over the right center field wall to give the Stags an early 1-0 lead. Ethan Hibbard would bring home a pair with his first double of the game and Selinger capped the four-run inning with a RBI single to left.

The Stags scored in all six of their at-bats, plating three in the second on doubles from Bucciero and Matt Bergevin.

Selinger would line a RBI double to begin the scoring in the fourth and Catalano would follow with a run-scoring single. Ferrara would cap that scoring with a two-run moonshot over the centerfield wall.

Fairfield's biggest inning came with a five-spot in the sixth as they got RBI hits from Selinger, Bucciero, and Aidan Baglino. TJ Schmalzle and Ferrara also drove in runs with a bases loaded walk and hit by pitch, respectively.

That was more run support than McVeigh needed as he picked up his fourth win of the spring with a six-inning outing allowing two runs and five hits. He struck out nine and has now totaled 23 strikeouts in his last 14 innings.

Bo Buckley came in relief to finish up a scoreless ninth inning.

Fairfield will compete in two more home midweek contests, starting on Tuesday against Hofstra at 3pm.
