FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Bowen Baker struck out a career-high 11 batters and
Dean Ferrara led the offense with four hits as the Fairfield University Baseball team took the middle game of their three-game set against Saint Peter's with a 12-2 final score. Ferrara also led the squad with four RBI, including a solo homer, his second of the year.
"Certainly, Bo Baker did a great job getting through seven and keeping them down," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Our hitters certainly scored some runs with the long ball today. They provided the runs necessary. Even the guys who came into the game provided some extra runs scored too."
The Stags (15-17; 7-1 MAAC) scored four runs in the third and seven in the fifth to take control of the game.
Matt Bergevin and
Ethan Hibbard started the scoring output with back-to-back RBI singles to open the scoring.
Matt Bucciero would follow with a two-run opposite field homer, his eighth this year and his third this week.
Fairfield broke the game open with a seven-spot in the fifth, highlighted by two hits and four RBI by Ferrara in the frame. Ferrara started the inning with a long solo homer over the center field wall. Bucciero and
Tyler Kipp would add RBI singles before Ferrara put an exclamation mark on the inning with a bases clearing three-run double.
That's all the run support Baker needed as he went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, one walk, and a personal-best 11 strikeouts. He did not allow a hit until the fourth, when he surrendered a one-out single. He would respond by striking out the side in the frame, and punching out five of the next six hitters he faced.
Peter Phillips and
Ryan Maiorano pitched the final two scoreless innings of relief to secure Fairfield's seventh MAAC win of the season.
Ferrara led the Stags with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. Bergevin and Bucciero also had multiple hit days for the squad.
Fairfield will look for the sweep of the series tomorrow at 1pm.
