Greensboro, N.C.-Trailing by a 3-1 count in the final match of their Spring Break trip to North Carolina on Thursday afternoon, the Fairfield University women's tennis team bounced back with wins at number five singles from freshman Lily Malinowski in straight sets (7-6, 6-2), a see-saw victory at number one singles by sophomore Sarah Liu (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) and a thrilling, match-clinching triumph in three sets at number two singles by senior Katarina Plumtree (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) to post a 4-3 victory over the host UNC Greensboro Spartans. The victory snaps a three-match skid for the Stags, who are now 2-5 on the season.
Fairfield took the all-important doubles point at UNC Greensboro with a pair of 6-4 wins coming from the duos of Lily Malinowski and Francesca Karman at number two and Scarlett Hutchinson and Laina Campos at number three.
Head coach Jeff Bickler was pleased with his team's performance to close out their trip to North Carolina saying, "Today was a great team victory against a very good team capped off by Katarina's win at number two singles. It's nice to get a win down south with contributions coming from multiple players throughout our lineup!"
Up next, the women's tennis team is scheduled to open the northern outdoor portion of its 2024 schedule on Saturday, March 16 when the Sharks of Long Island University are slated to visit the Walsh Athletic Center courts. First serve is set for 12 noon.
