FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped its opening game in the Cal State-Fullerton/Long Beach State Tournament this afternoon and saw its nightcap with Cal State-Fullerton canceled due to weather on the first day of the event. The Stags scored first but ended up falling by a 4-2 count against the University of Toledo.
Both teams picked up a hit in two of their first three at-bats but neither team could convert those base runners into a run as the game was scoreless after three innings.
Morgan Sylvestre was responsible for both of the Stags' hits, slicing a single in the first inning and another in the third inning. The scoreless tie was finally broken in the bottom of the fourth inning when Toledo was able to post a pair of runs. Kendra VanderLugt provided the offense with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence.
The lead was short-lived however as Fairfield rallied for two runs of its own with Sylvestre once again lending a hand to the offense.
Gia Scannapieco opened the inning with an infield hit to the left side.
Danica Silvestri hit into a fielder's choice to keep a runner on first base temporarily as she went on to stole second base to put a runner in scoring position.
Charli Warren sent her to third base with her infield single, setting up Sylvestre again. The junior laced a two-run double to left field that enabled Fairfield to tie the score at 2-2.
Toledo completed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jenna Kroll sent a pitch over the left field fence to regain her team's two-run lead, an edge which would stay intact for the rest of the game.Â
The Stags return to the diamond on Friday with a pair of games in the Cal State-Fullerton/Long Beach State Tournament, taking on the University of North Dakota at 12 pm EST followed by 2:30 pm EST match with Utah State. Fairfield finishes up the tournament with a single game against Yale University on Saturday at 1 pm EST.
