FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Zach Selinger and
Matt Bergevin both homered but it was not enough as the Fairfield University Baseball team dropped a 10-6 decision to UMass Lowell in midweek action at Don and Chris Cook Field. This was the final tune-up for the Stags before Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play that will begin with a three-game series against Iona at home on Friday.
The Stags were the first team on the board as they plated a couple of runs in the bottom of the first, starting the games with back-to-back doubles by
Dean Ferrara and
Luke Nomura. Bergevin brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to center and
Ethan Hibbard drove in a run for the seventh-straight game with a single up the middle.
Fairfield gave up the lead over the next two innings but regained the advantage by scoring in two-straight frames. Selinger blasted his first home run as a Stag to left, a solo shot on the first pitch he saw in the fourth. Bergevin provided the power in the fifth with a two-run blast over the left center field wall.
Payten Wawruck would cap the scoring with a line drive double down the line to give the Stags a 6-3 lead.
The River Hawks threatened in the sixth with the bases loaded and nobody out but
Jack Erbeck came in and dominated the bats by retiring three-straight hitters including back-to-back strikeouts.
The road team would find their offense, however, by scoring seven runs over the next two innings for the 10-6 decision.
Wawruck, Nomura, and
Matt Bucciero led the Stags with two hits apiece as the Stags tallied 13 hits.
Fairfield will open up MAAC play with a schedule change. The Stags and the Iona Gaels will play a three-game set at Cook Field with Fairfield as the visiting team. The series will start with a double-header on Friday at 11:30am and conclude with a single game on Saturday at 2pm.
