Stags Lock Down Quinnipiac For 25th Win of Season

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team put forth a tremendous defensive effort, holding in-state rivals Quinnipiac to 28 percent shooting in a 64-46 victory at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The win was Fairfield's 25th of the season, tying the program's single-season wins record last accomplished during the 2021-22 campaign. The victory was also the Stags' 23rd-straight of the season, tying the second-longest in the nation.

"It's a testament to how we prepare every single day," Head Coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "We have a lot of big goals and I think a lot of people thought we were crazy coming in with some of the goals but it's the same thing as winning the regular season championship. You have to be good every single day. This league is tough and we've played a lot of good opponents and to get to 25 wins with more games to play is special."

The Stags (25-1; 17-0 MAAC) led wire-to-wire after Kaety L'Amoreaux connected on two free throws just 24 seconds into the game. Fairfield would hold Quinnipiac without a point for the first six minutes of the contest and held a 13-7 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Fairfield held Quinnipiac to single-digit scoring in each of the first two quarters while taking a commanding 33-14 lead into halftime. Fairfield would shoot 47 percent in the first 20 minutes, led by the game's leading scorer Emina Selimovic who connected on all three of her field goal attempts. She would finish with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting to go along with six rebounds.

The Stags grabbed a double-digit lead in the second quarter by amassing a 9-0 run, starting with a traditional 3-point play by Kendall McGruder and ending with back-to-back buckets from Selimovic.

Fairfield led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter after McGruder and Mackenzie Daleba combined for a 7-0 run.

The Fairfield defense held Quinnipiac to just 28 percent shooting, the 10th time this season they held an opponent to under 30 percent shooting. It also marked the 11th time the Stags held a foe to fewer than 50 points.

Meghan Andersen was one of the leaders on the defensive end, swatting five blocked shots and also leading the team with three steals and tying a team-high with seven rebounds. She also helped put pressure on Quinnipiac's leading scorer Anna Foley who went 3-for-16 from the field.

The Stags will next hit the road for Riverdale, N.Y., to face Manhattan on Saturday at 2pm.
