HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Fairfield University Baseball team fell 4-2 and 16-4 in a doubleheader against James Madison on Sunday.
Dean Ferrara led the Stags offensively with four hits on Sunday including his fourth multi-hit game.
Game One: James Madison 4, Fairfield 2
After play was suspended in the second inning on Saturday due to inclement weather, the Stags and Dukes picked up the game on Sunday morning with Fairfield trailing 3-0.
Kyle Lesler and
Kevin Kell were the two pitchers used after action resumed and combined to toss the final 6.0 innings while allowing just one unearned run.
The Stags got two runs back and cut the deficit to 3-2 with a
Nick Sturino triple in the fourth, already the seventh triple for the team this season, which leads the nation.
The home team would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame with only one hit, a single that followed a passed ball, a hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
Fairfield would threaten in the ninth by getting two runners on with singles by
Matt Bucciero and
Luke Nomura, but the Dukes got the groundball double play to end the game.
Kell had his second-straight impressive outing with a career-high 4.0 innings allowing just three hits and striking out four. Despite coming out of the bullpen, he is second on the team in innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to a .158 batting average, the lowest on the squad.
Game Two: James Madison 16, Fairfield 4
Four Stags tallied multiple hits in the seven-inning nightcap, led by three hits from Ferrara but the Stags would strand six.
Matt Lussier,
Matt Bergevin, and Nomura all tallied two hits apiece. Bergevin had the biggest blast with his second homer of the spring, a two-run shot in the fifth.
With his three hits, Ferrara brings his season total to a team-best 13 and also leads the Stags with a .500 average.
The Stags will look to break through when they travel to George Mason for a three-game series next weekend.
