FAIRFAX, Va. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped a 3-0 decision in their series opener at George Mason.
Colin McVeigh logged his longest outing of the spring with 6.0 innings and
Blake Helmstetter hurled two scoreless innings of relief in the setback.
Fairfield managed three hits on the afternoon with
Dean Ferrara, who entered the game as the conference leader in hits per game, picking up the first base knock in the fourth.
Nick Sturino and
Matt Bucciero accounted for the other two singles. Sturino was also the lone Stag to get into scoring position after stealing second base in the fifth.
McVeigh would allow a two-run single in the second and another run-scoring hit in the fourth, but would keep the reigning A-10 champions off the board for the other four frames as he tossed a season-high 95 pitches.
Helmstetter would enter in relief and allow just a walk while striking out three in two frames.
George Mason pitcher Nick Martins would finish his complete game with just 98 pitches.
Catcher
Ethan Hibbard would control the running game with two caught stealing throws in the contest.
The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow at 1pm.
