FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In a season full of historical moments, the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team checked off their biggest accomplishment, clinching the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Championship with a 95-65 victory over Niagara on Saturday. The win extends the nation's second-longest winning streak to 22-straight games while improving their conference record to a perfect 16-0.
"This is the first goal down," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "Regular season championships are hard because you have to be good every night. You can show up and play your best basketball in the conference tournament and still win a championship, but the regular season championship takes day in and day out consistency. I'm so proud of how this team shows up every day for each other and plays together. I'm really proud of this group."
With their biggest offensive output against a Division I opponent this season, six Stags scored in double-figures led by freshman Road Runner
Meghan Andersen with 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting.
Janelle Brown followed with 15 points while going 7-for-9 from the field with
Emina Selimovic and
Kaety L'Amoreaux adding 14. In her first game back off an injury,
Kendall McGruder chipped in 11 with a 4-for-5 shooting mark and Izabella Nicoletti-Leite rounded out the group with 10.
The Stags (24-1, 16-0 MAAC) shot an amazing 63 percent from the floor, the fourth best mark in a game in program history and the highest since 1990.
Fairfield led wire-to-wire after netting the first eight points of the game, forcing Niagara to take their first timeout just 1:19 into the contest.
Niagara would cut their deficit to three after the first bucket of the second quarter, but the Stags would respond with a 22-6 run to grab a commanding 19-point lead and never looked back.
Fairfield also connected on 10 3-pointers with Andersen and McGruder combining to go 7-for-9 from deep. They raised their season total to 227 made 3-pointers, tying for the 19th most by any team in conference history.
The Stags also did a remarkable job in taking care of the basketball against a Niagara team that has forced the most turnovers in the country, by recording a positive assist-to-turnover ratio and tying a season-high with 24 helpers. L'Amoreaux and McGruder both led the Stags and tied their career-highs with six assists.
With the win, the Stags clinched the fifth MAAC Regular Season title in program history and their second in the last three seasons.
"We've got a bunch of upperclassmen who have lived for this moment," Coach Carly said. "You can go up and down this lineup in people who have given us that winning mindset every single day."
The Stags will look to continue their winning ways when they host in-state rivals Quinnipiac on Thursday at 7pm.
