EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University Women's Basketball freshman guard
Julia Karpell was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week after her career-high 18 points outburst in Fairfield's win over Staten Island on Tuesday. Karpell went 6-for-8 from behind the 3-point line in helping the Stags to their 750th win as a Division I program.
"I am so proud of Julia and the work she has put in to this point," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "She is a shining example of what it means to stay committed to the process, continue to work even when the results don't show immediately, and be ready when your number is called. She has been a sponge learning from her teammates and coaches, and I know this is only the beginning for Jules!"
Karpell's 6-for-8 shooting performance was tied for the fourth-best in a game in program history as she highlighted her night by going a perfect 4-for-4 in the second half.
Karpell became just the second Fairfield rookie ever to connect on six or more 3-pointers in a game joining current teammate
Kaety L'Amoreaux who accomplished the feat last season.
Her six 3-pointers accounted for her career-high 18-point output. She logged 24 minutes and added a rebound in the victory.
Karpell came to Fairfield after a four-year playing career at St. John Vianney, helping the team to a top-10 national ranking in three of her seasons. She connected on 127 3-pointers in her high school career including a career-high 56 during her junior season.
The Stags are currently riding a five-game winning streak that features a win over the ACC on the road and most recently a victory over Big East Villanova. Karpell and the Stags are back in action on Sunday when they travel to St. John's for a 2pm tip-off.
