Stags Travel to St. John’s to Wrap Up Non-Conference Play

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will wrap up non-conference action with a trip to Queens, N.Y., to face the St. John's Red Storm on Sunday at 2pm. The Stags, riding a five-game winning streak, will play their second Big East squad in a week after most recently defeating Villanova 74-71 on Sunday.

The Stags had to rally from seven points down in the fourth quarter and did so with energy on the defensive side by holding the Wildcats without a field goal for seven minutes in the final quarter. On the offensive side, Kendall McGruder made big buckets down the stretch with back-to-back jumpers to give the Stags the lead and then increase their advantage.

Road Runner Meghan Andersen led the way for the Stags in their thrilling home win over the Wildcats with a game-high 22 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

Andersen and McGruder were joined by Emina Selimovic as the three Stags in double-figures as Selimovic finished with 14 points. She has reached double-digits in scoring in each of the last three games, a span where she is shooting 74 percent from the field.

The win over Villanova was the program's first-ever win over the Wildcats after losing the previous 12 meetings.

Point guard Izabela Nicoletti Leite continued her accurate passing performance with four more assists without a turnover. She has now gone 55-straight minutes without a miscue while dishing out 15 assists. She enters the game second in the nation in assist-turnover ratio.

St. John's enters play with a 9-1 overall record, holding the 16th best winning percentage in the country. The Red Storm also allows only 48.2 points per game, representing the lowest number in the nation. Lashae Dwyer is the team leader with 15.8 points per contest, the only student-athlete averaging double figures.

Fairfield will next open up MAAC play with a visit from Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at 2pm.
