Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Edged By Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team dropped its regular-season finale on the road by a 3-1 score against Quinnipiac University. The Bobcats erased a one-goal deficit by scoring three times in a six-minute span during the second half.

The first half saw each team having opportunities offensively but strong play from the goalkeepers kept the game scoreless. Fairfield challenged the Bobcats defense early and often through the first 30 minutes of the game with William Pierce providing most of the opportunities.

The junior provided the first chance when with a shot that was directed toward the lower corner that forced goalkeeper Karl Netzell to make a diving stop. A few minutes later, it was Pierce once again finding space enough to wield another challenging shot which Netzell was able to push aside. Thomas Drillien placed the third Fairfield shot on goal with an attempt that was once again turned away in the 33rd minute.

Quinnipiac had a golden chance in the 34th minute when Drew Seguro broke free and sent the ball toward the right corner but goalkeeper Viktor Nikolov came off his line to kick the ball away from danger. The first half ended without any more incident, sending the two teams to intermission in the midst of a scoreless draw.

The second half began with Fairfield pushing forward to try and capture the lead, a strategy that eventually provided the game's first goal. Nifty ball movement from just over midfield resulted in Sam Danner and Stephen Perno setting up the scoring chance with the ball eventually landing on the foot of Drillien. The forward finished the play by pushing the ball past the goalkeeper in the 51st minute to give the lead to the Stags.

The lead stood for more than 20 minutes before Quinnipiac was able to put together an offensive run that would decide the match. The Bobcats would have nearly tied the game on a couple of occasions if not for a couple of quality saves from Nikolov. Eventually, the home team was able to find the back of the net when Andrew Monteserin carried the ball into the box and put a shot beyond Nikolov's reach.

The Bobcats took the lead just three minutes later when Fredrik Moen was open at the top of the box from where he released a shot that Nikolov put his hand on but the momentum of the ball carried the shot into the back of the net. Monteserin closed the scoring by finishing a one-on-one chance from the right side of the box to put Quinnipiac ahead 3-1 in the 79th minute.

Nikolov finished the match with four saves while Netzell ended the 90 minutes with three stops.
