FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will celebrate their home opener by unveiling their 2023-24 MAAC Championship banner and hand out their championship rings during a special pregame ceremony before their Tuesday night game against Richmond. The Stags will begin the pregame festivities at 6:40pm with tipoff coming at 7pm at Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
The game will pit two of the best mid-majors in the country with both teams ranking in the top-10 in the World Exposure Mid-Major Poll. Fairfield enters as the top team in the poll while receiving all 28 first-place votes.
The Stags also tallied 11 votes in the AP Top-25 Poll, eight more than they received in the preseason. Fairfield garnered more national attention after earning their first-ever win over a SEC school, topping Arkansas on the road 81-67.
All 11 players who appeared in the game got into the scoring column, led by
Kaety L'Amoreaux's 18 points. The sophomore was joined by
Meghan Andersen (17) and
Kendall McGruder (13) as the three Stags to reach double figures. Andersen's total brought her career number to 514 as she became the fastest Stag to reach 500 points, doing so in 34 games.
A year after breaking the program's single-season 3-point record by over 100 long-range shots, the Stags connected on 13 3-pointers in their win at Arkansas. Six different players connected on at least one trifecta, led by Andersen and McGruder who had three apiece.
Richmond, who is ranked No. 8 in the World Exposure Mid-Major Poll, enters the game with a 2-0 record after defeating Temple and Morgan State. Rachel Ullstrom is the team's leading scorer with 21.5 points per game, highlighted by a 32-point performance against the Owls. The Spiders won the A-10 Championship last season and earned a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Stags will head back on the road when they travel to Oklahoma State on Saturday at 3pm EST.
