Men's Soccer Gains Draw At Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Any point on the road is a good point and the Fairfield University picked up one of those precious road points this afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason favorite Iona University. The result extended the Stags' unbeaten streak to four games, posting a 2-0-2 mark during the stretch.

"To get a point at a difficult place to play against a really good opponent says something about this team," Head Coach Krystian Witkowski said. "The guys really showed their resiliency again today and came away with the point. This was a massive collective effort which is the best takeaway from today."

Both offenses seemed to click throughout the game, gaining momentum at different times of the match. Iona carried some of that momentum early in the match and put forth a couple of scoring chances, the best coming in the 12th minute that ended up going just wide of the right post.

Two minutes later, Fairfield converted a misplayed clear that ended with Devin Zachry collecting the ball near the left post and putting a shot to the short side that was saved. The ball came back to Zachry and he rolled a pass to Alex Marin who finished from 5 yards away from goal, pushing the Stags in front in the 22nd minute.

The lead lasted just a few minutes before Iona was able to connect the dots with its own goal. Alvaro Maniero and Elird Mero pieced together a couple of passes with the last one feeding Bautista Rossi who was cutting toward the goal. He collected the pass and sent a shot just inside the near post to tie the match at 1-1 in the 26th minute.

Iona held a slight edge with shots at the end of the first half, posting seven compared to Fairfield's four attempts. Fairfield goalkeeper Viktor Nikolov made three saves to keep the game in a first-half draw.

The second half also provided Fairfield with opportunities but no opportunity was better than the chance created in the 51st minute and Zachry was in the middle of it again. Fairfield moved the ball down the pitch and sent the ball into the box where Zachry timed a volley perfectly but the ball just sailed over the cross bar to keep the game deadlocked.

Iona began to move the ball later in the second half and put pressure on the Stags defense. Nikolov and his back line were up to the challenge though as the goalkeeper was able to make five saves during the second half including three in the final 13 minutes.

Fairfield has a 10-day layoff before its next match when it will travel to Lehigh University for an October 15 match. Game time is scheduled for 6 pm.
