FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team had two shots to find the equalizer in the final minute, but crosstown rivals Sacred Heart was able to keep them off the scoreboard as the Stags fell 2-1 to the Pioneers on Wednesday night. Fairfield out-shot Sacred Heart 38-12 but the Pioneers' goalkeeper Kyran Thievon made 13 saves as the Stags dropped their first conference match of the season.
On top of their 38 shots and 14 shots on goal, the Stags had all 13 corner kicks of the match with eight of those coming in the second half.
Elle Scott was the lone Stag to beat the keeper as her goal in the 72nd minute put the Stags on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1. Scott was given the ball in the box by
Maddy Theriault and Scott was able to deek her defender to create space and zipped the ball into the far post for her fifth goal of the season and the 25th of her career. Scott becomes the 12th Stag all-time and the second this season to reach that career mark.
After the Scott goal, the Stags continued to press forward with seven shots in the last 18 minutes. Theriault's chance in the 79th minute hit the top of the post and Scott's chance one minute later went wide.
In the final minute,
Ashlyn Walsh put a shot on goal that forced a diving save from Thievon to her right, setting up another corner kick. Theriault had the last chance of the match and her chance got by the keeper, but trickled wide in the final seconds.
Sacred Heart picked up both of their goals in the first half, coming in the 19th and 39th minutes.
The loss is Fairfield's first MAAC setback of the season and drops them to second in the MAAC, behind Quinnipiac's 8-0 mark. The Stags also held the third-best winning percentage in the nation coming into the match.
Fairfield will look to get back on track when they travel to Marist to face the Red Foxes on Wednesday night at 7pm.
