Stags Shutout The Mount

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team held the Mount St. Mountaineers without a shot while Maddy Theriault netted the game-winners as the Stags leave Emmitsberg with a 1-0 victory over the Mount. With the win, the Stags take over first place in the conference with 22 points coming on a 7-0-1 record. It also marked the first time in Mount St. Mary's program history that they were left without a shot for the entire match.

"We did a good job of meeting the demands of the game," Head Coach David Barrett, who picked up his 299th career win said. "The demand in this game was less physical and emotional and more of a tactical challenge and today was an example of having to meet whatever the moment looks like."

Fairfield out-shot the Mount 21-0, but it was Theriault recording the only shot that mattered with her score in the 54th minute. Elle Scott sent a cross into the box where Theriault was able to find space and push it past the keeper for her team-leading eighth goal of the season and the 26th of her career. With the score, she moves into seventh on the program's all-time list.

Scott's assist was her fifth of the season, tying Reagan Klarmann for the team lead. It also marked the 22nd of her career, putting her in sixth on the program's all-time list. She also recorded her 70th career point, placing her eighth all-time.

The Fairfield backline of Sam Erickson, Meghan Carragher, Caroline Kelly, and Kendall Patten were dominant in the win, holding the Mount without a shot for the first time in program history. On the offensive side, the Stags had all 21 shot attempts, all six corner kicks, and all eight shots on goal.

For the season, the Stags are holding opponents to just 8.2 shots per game with 3.6 of those attempts on target.

Goalkeeper Katie Wright posted her 15th career clean sheet, despite not facing a shot in the match.

The Stags will look to keep their first-place position in the MAAC when they travel to crosstown rivals Sacred Heart on Wednesday night at 7pm.
