Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Stay Perfect in the MAAC with Win At Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team shot 75 percent in the third quarter, out-scoring the host Bobcats 22-14 and leading to a 74-59 victory on the road. The win extends the nation's second-longest winning streak to 14-straight games and improves Fairfield's conference record to a perfect 8-0. Meghan Andersen led a trio of Stags in double-figures with 19 points and she was joined by Kendall McGruder who finished with a season-high 18 and Janelle Brown who chipped in 13.

"I'm proud of how we responded," Head Coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "I thought at Marist we didn't do a good job of sharing the basketball. I thought we took that to heart to create good shots for one another and you saw us stick with it and play the right way."

Fairfield also improves their overall mark to 16-1, the third-highest winning percentage in the nation. The Stags out-scored the Bobcats in the first three quarters, using their third quarter run to mount a lead they would not relinquish.

McGruder was the one who gave the Stags the early lead after the first quarter as she swished in a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to put the Stags up 23-20. The junior would also connect on another buzzer-beating trifecta to beat the halftime horn.

The Stags used a 19-4 run over the first seven minutes of the third stanza to build up a 20-point lead, their largest of the game. Five different Stags scored during that stretch, led by Brown's seven, including a steal and layup to get into double digits. Andersen capped the run as Brown found her in the lane and she completed the layup.

Fairfield's defense led to their offensive success as the squad forced 17 turnovers, and scoring 22 points off those miscues. Andersen led the defensive effort with a career-high four steals.

On the reverse side, the Stags shared the ball much better than their last game as they dished out 16 assists while only turning the ball over 11 times. Emina Selimovic led the passing attack with a personal-best four assists.

As a team, the Stags shot 51 percent from the floor while hitting nine long-range shots. McGruder led the way tying her career-high with four 3-pointers.

The Stags will return home to host Canisius on Saturday at 2pm.
