POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team held the Marist Red Foxes to just 46 points on a 23 percent shooting mark, helping the squad to a 60-46 victory and their 13th-straight win.
Emina Selimovic contributed on both ends of the floor with her first double-double as a Stag with 15 points and tying a career-best with 10 rebounds.
Meghan Andersen led the team in scoring with 19 points, her tenth straight game in double-figures.
"We relied on our defense," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "It wasn't pretty but we got the stops we needed to on defense to give ourselves a bit of a cushion. We rebounded the ball a little better in the second half but when your offense doesn't travel, you have to rely on your defense."
Fairfield (15-1, 7-0 MAAC) held Marist to a .232 field goal percentage on 13-for-56 shooting, the lowest by any Fairfield opponent this season. It is also the third time in the first seven conference games the Stags have held a team to below 50 points.
The Stags overtook a slim Marist lead and gave themselves a cushion with a 17-0 run in the second quarter, a period where they outscored the Red Foxes 24-7. That allowed Fairfield to grab a 16-point halftime lead as the squad shot 45 percent in the first 20 minutes.
The defense on both sides took over as Marist would cut the lead to single digits, holding the Stags to just seven points in the third quarter.
Selimovic would hit two big 3-pointers in the final 5:34 to extend the lead back to double-figures. Selimovic would help the Stags out-rebound Marist 24-18 in the second half while grabbing eight of those caroms.
"We challenged all our 'Road Runners' at halftime to be better on the defensive boards," Coach Thibault-DuDonis said. "She took the challenge. Doing things on defense and things you can control gives you some offense and she got big buckets for us down the stretch."
Andersen led the Stags with 19 points, her tenth-straight game in double-figures.
Janelle Brown added nine points with all of those coming during the crucial 17-0 run in the second quarter. She also led the defensive effort with four steals.
The Stags will stay on the road when they travel to in-state rivals Quinnipiac on Thursday at 5pm.
