CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. --
Alex Senior tallied her second game-winning goal of the season, this time finding the back of the cage in the fourth quarter to send the Fairfield University field hockey team to a 2-1 win at La Salle University this morning. The sophomore also was credited with the game winner in Monday's victory over Bryant University and now has a goal in all three Fairfield victories in 2023.
The Stags improved to 2-0 on the road with today's win which is the first time they won their first two away games since starting the abbreviated 2020-21 spring season with the same mark. Fairfield defeated
Hofstra (3-2) and Sacred Heart (1-0) that season and finished the campaign with a 2-2 record off campus. The team has allowed just one goal in its two true road games this year.
Fairfield control tempo early, attacking the La Salle circle while dictating defensively on its own side of the pitch. The
Stags grabbed the lead when
Courtland Schumacher scored her first goal of the season at the 10:10 mark of the first quarter, just three minutes after she entered the game. It was one of three shots taken by Fairfield in the opening quarter while La Salle did not manage one attempt on target .
The second quarter did not change the momentum in the least as the Stags once again held a slight edge in shots taken by a 3-1 margin. The one shot taken by La Salle came off the stick of
HartschÂ
Dunja but goalkeeper Peyton Rahn kicked the ball away from danger. The attempt would be taken in the 26th minute and would represent the team's only shot in the first half. Two of Fairfield's three attempts were the result of a penalty corner but neither reached the goalkeeper. Pilar
Mengotti's shot was blocked in front while Agustina
Casteluchi's try went wide of the mark.
La Salle tied the game early in the third quarter when Sol
Espona and Sofia Pla worked together just two minutes into the period. Pla set the ball up for
Espona who finished the play with her third goal of the season. Pla earned her second
assist of the season in setting up her teammate.Â
Fairfield regained the lead in the fourth quarter when Senior converted her shot into the sophomore's third goal of the year in the 49th minute of play. La Salle moved forward more aggressively over the final seven minutes of the game, resulting in
three shots taken over the final six minutes of the game. Tatum Johnson made an attempt in the 54th minute but was turned away by
Payton Rahn's save. Pla sent a shot toward goal in the 57th minute but was blocked up front before it reached the goalkeeper. Finally,
Espona made one more effort to tie the game in the closing minute but once again Rahn was equal to the task.
Rahn finished the game with three saves while her counterpart Emily
Streib ended the day with just one save.
The Stags will have a week of before returning to action on Friday, September 15 with a short trip to Yale University for a 6 pm start. The match will be the second in Fairfield's current three-game road trip that ends on September 17 at Lafayette College.
