Men's Soccer Opens MAAC Slate At Mount St. Mary's Saturday

FARFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Saturday night with a trip to Mount St. Mary's. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm. The two teams opened the 2022 campaign against each other with the Stags earning a 1-0 victory at home.

About The Series
  • The two teams have met only once in their histories which came when Fairfield and Mount St. Mary's opened the season against once another in 2022. The Stags had the better of it with 11 shots taken and three put on  goal. One of those shots came from Raz Amir, who secured a free ball just outside box and found an open corner of the goal to push his team in front. Goalkeeper James Anderson made the goal stand up by making four saves, including three in an eight-minute offensive burst during the second half, to earn the clean sheet.

About Fairfield
  • The Stags bring a three-game winning streak into Saturday's match with all those victories coming against non-conference opponents. Fairfield last won three straight non-conference matches in a season during the 2013 campaign when it edged Yale, UMass, and UMass Lowell. The team has one more non-conference date on the schedule, a home game against Harvard University on Tuesday, September 19 at Lessing Field.
  • Fairfield is one of two MAAC teams to own a winning record on the road so far, posting a 2-0 mark after last weekend's sweep of Brown University and Colgate University. Rider is the only other team above .500 away from home, sporting a 2-1-1 mark. Winning on the road is not too unusual for the Stags as the program owns a .520 winning percentage in MAAC road games since 2013 (22-20-7).
  • Victor Nikolov made his Fairfield debut in the LIU match, making a pair of saves to secure the victory. The newcomer made a save in each half, recording a stop in the 13th and 50th minutes. He and teammate James Anderson have combined to allow just two goals in the team's last four games leading to a team goals against average of 1.00.
  • Kaea Rangihaeata collected his second goal of the young season which is tied for the top spot among his teammates .The sophomore has a team-high five total points which comes off his two goals and one assist. Last season, Rangihaeata earned one assist in 19 appearances. William Pierce also has a pair of goals for four points on the season.

About Mount St. Mary's
  • The Mount brings an 0-4-1 record into Saturday night's game with three of those four setbacks being by one goal. The team has played three of its last four contests on the road with the lone exception coming against Delaware on September 5. The program enters its second season in the MAAC, winning conference matches in its inaugural campaign.
  • Mount St. Mary's has tallied five goals in the young campaign with a different student-athlete scoring each of those goals. Boby Marstellar and Dominik Topolsky represent the team's top scorers with three points each, registering a goal and an assist each. In the goal, Ethan Russell has played every minute, posting a 2.80 goals against average with a .600 save percentage (4.2 saves per game).
  • The Mount will play four of its first five MAAC games in Maryland with the lone exception coming on September 30 when the team travels to Saint Peter's University. The final home game of the season comes on October 25 when Mount St. Mary's hosts Rider University.
