Stags Battle to 3-3 Draw at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team battled to a 3-3 draw at Sacred Heart behind a pair of goals from Sam Kersey and a go-ahead score by Maddy Theriault on Wednesday night. Fairfield out-shot their crosstown rivals 21-14 while holding an 8-4 advantage on shots on goal.

Seven of those 21 shots came in the first 11 minutes of the game as the Stags took the first seven of the match. Cailin Panacek had the lone shot that reached the target, forcing a save from the Pioneer goalkeeper.

The Stags finally got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute on a corner kick where Meghan Carragher found the head of Kersey who pushed it past the goalkeeper for her second score of the season. It would be the first of two assists for Carragher who now leads the team with four helpers.

Kersey would touch net again to open the second half as she put back a rebound for her second goal of the game, giving Fairfield a 2-0 advantage.

That would be the first of five goals scored in the second half with the Pioneers netting back-to-back goals in a three-minute span starting in the 56th minute.

The Stags looked like they had broken through as Theriault pushed the go-ahead score past the goalkeeper for her fourth score of the season and give the Stags a 3-2 lead. Carragher was again the playmaker of the tally for her second helper of the contest.

The Pioneers would get that score back and tie up the game in the final 10 minutes on a Morgan Bovardi tally.

Reagan Klarmann had the final attempt for the Stags to break the tie but it was picked up by the goalkeeper to preserve the draw.

The tie is Fairfield's third draw this season and their second-straight.

The Stags will now start conference play on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Mount St. Mary's at 1pm. Before the match, the Stags will honor their six-member senior class as part of their Senior Day festivities.
