Bryant’s Late Goal Downs Stags

SMITHTOWN, R.I. – Bryant's Catherine Bean launched a long strike that just snuck inside the post in the 88th minute to break a scoreless match and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team. Katie Wright was solid in net despite the loss as she tied a season-high with four saves and came two minutes away from recording her second clean sheet.

The Stags had the majority of offensive chances, however, out-shooting the Bulldogs 14-10. Although the two teams could not find the back of the net until very late in the game, the Stags nearly found their first goal just four minutes into the match. Allie Kirby headed a cross into the back of the net but was called for offsides, the best opportunity for the Stags in the match.

Caroline Kelly also nearly headed in a goal in the 19th minute but her attempt was caught on the near post by Bryant goalkeeper Kathryn MacNeil.

Fairfield would force the Bryant keeper to three saves in the second half with two of those chances coming from the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Maddy Theriault, but both of her chances were stopped. The best chance for the sophomore came in the 68th minute after a turnover in Bryant's defensive third but the defense recovered and forced Theriault into a left-footed shot that was right into the hands of MacNeil.

The long-strike by Bean in the 88th minute was her fifth shot of the game and her fourth attempt on net, with both numbers a match high. Bean took a shot from nearly 20-yards out in the 56th minute which was easily saved by Wright.

Both teams were even with eight corner kicks a piece, but the Stags were called for three offsides, thwarting a couple of chances.

The Stags continue their two-game road trip when they travel to Fordham for a meeting with the Rams on Sunday at 3pm.
