Fairfield Mourns Passing of Men’s Basketball Hall of Famer Greg Francis

Fairfield University Athletics is saddened by the passing of Greg Francis on Sunday, April 2 at the age of 48. Francis played four seasons for Fairfield Men's Basketball, earning MAAC Championship MVP honors in 1997 after leading the Stags to the NCAA Tournament.

Francis ranks eighth all-time at Fairfield with 1,570 points. He graduated as the Stags' career leader in three-pointers, and his 230 made triples are still fourth-most in program history. Francis was an All-MAAC Second Team honoree in 1996. His most memorable performance as a Stag came in the 1997 NCAA Tournament, where he made a then-program record eight three-pointers on his way to 26 points as #16-seeded Fairfield nearly upset Dean Smith's #1 North Carolina Tar Heels.

After graduation, Francis went on to play professionally in the British Basketball League and was a part of the Canadian National Team roster for the 2000 Summer Olympics. He later coached Canada's junior national team and took on collegiate head coaching positions with the University of Alberta, the University of Waterloo and Ontario Tech. Most recently, Francis was the Director of Sport Development for the Ontario Basketball Association.

Francis was inducted into the Fairfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
