Stags Down Quinnipiac in Regular Season Finale Thursday

GUILFORD, CONN. – A thrilling end to the regular season provided a much need victory for the Fairfield University men's tennis team as the Stags defeated Quinnipiac 4-3 Thursday afternoon.

"Quinnipiac's always a really tough team, so this was a really big team win," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker postgame. "When we've needed wins the guys have come together 11 strong and we're looking forward to getting a chance to do some damage in the tournament."

The day began with a split of the top two doubles duels, with Kostas Kollias and Keean Shah taking a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 spot, leaving the round to be decided in the final bout. Alex Aguiar and Kaya Gore would go to a tiebreak in the third flight, winning a tiebreak 8-4 to secure the point for the Stags heading into singles.

In solo action after the Bobcats briefly leveled the match, Kollias would complete a sweep of the day for himself with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, and shortly after Griffin Schlesinger would nab a 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 6 slot to put Fairfield up 3-1 as a team with the first three flights still in action. Tolunay Sumer would secure the deciding point for the Stags with the next victory at No. 3 singles, earning the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 as the Stags end the MAAC season with four wins in their last five matches.

With the win the Stags officially lock up a playoff spot as they end the 2022-23 regular season at 7-9 and 4-2 in MAAC play, but with four conference opponents still needing to play their respective final matches, will await official seeding for next weekend's MAAC Championships in New Jersey.
