Men's Tennis Nabs Sweep of SHU at TCT

TRUMBULL, CONN. – Another stellar performance at the Tennis Club of Trumbull saw the Fairfield University men's tennis team sweep Sacred Heart 4-0 Wednesday afternoon.

"It was nice to finish the indoor portion of the schedule off with a win," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "We battled hard and kept our focus throughout the match. A great team win!"

Fairfield would concede only the initial doubles flight to the Pioneers, which was quickly answered by a 6-2 win from Kaya Gore and Griffin Schlesinger to spark the momentum for the hosts. Kostas Kollias and Tolunay Sumer captured a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles which gave the Stags a victory in the round to go up 1-0. The two sides also squared off in a fourth doubles bracket, with the Stags capturing yet another win by a final of 6-1 courtesy of Will O'Brien and Alex Aguiar.

Moving to singles action, the Stags garnered victories in each of the top three flights including a straight set victory in the topflight by Gore, 6-4, 6-3 to sweep the day for himself. Jonathan Olive-Blanco would do the same, taking the No. 2 duel in consecutive frames 6-2, 6-3 to put the Stags on the verge of clinching the win.

At No. 3 singles Tolunay Sumer was outlasted in the opening set 6-3, before he rallied back with a convincing 6-1 thrashing in the second before clinching the victory for both himself and the team with a victory in the final set 6-4. The remaining three matches would be left unfinished giving the Stags a clean sweep over their crosstown rival and finish the indoor season at the Tennis Club of Trumbull a perfect 2-0.

Fairfield men's tennis is back in action for three matches over spring break this coming week as they head down to Orlando, Fla. The trip kicks off Sunday against IUPUI, followed by a Tuesday meeting with FDU before wrapping up the trip against Marquette on Thursday.
