Stags Open Spring Break Trip With Singles Rally Over IUPUI

Fairfield garnered all four victories in singles play, with four of the six solo duels going to a decisive third set

ORLANDO, Fla. – A thrilling start to a three-game stint in Florida this week saw the Fairfield University men's tennis team nab four singles victories to rally back for a 4-3 win over IUPUI Sunday morning.

"What a comeback by the men today!" said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "They showed some championship level resilience today that should give everyone confidence. We made it a little tough on ourselves after doubles but we battled through it and I'm proud of their performance!"

Despite their opponents garnering the point as a team in dual play, Kaya Gore and Tolunay Sumer earned a 6-3 win in the No. 2 flight to open the day, providing a spark for the two individually heading into solo action.

In singles, four of the six contests would go the distance, with the sides splitting straight set victories in the No. 4 and 5 duels, as Kostas Kollias secured a 7-6, 6-3 win in the latter flight to keep his side in the contest down 2-1. In the No. 2 game Jonathan Olive-Blanco earned a victory in his opening set 7-5, and rallied from a second set defeat to secure the win in the third round 6-2 to level the team score at two.

The Stags would take the lead in the match courtesy of Gore, who also nabbed victories in the first and third sets of his duel to take a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win and put Fairfield on the brink of victory at 3-2. The Jaguars would battle back at No. 6 singles, before Sumer bounced back from an opening set defeat to win the final two 6-4, 6-3 to take the win and give his squad its second win in a row to open the trip down south.

Fairfield men's tennis continues spring break action in Orlando on Tuesday when they take on Fairleigh Dickinson.
