HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team saw their defense hold Quinnipiac to 52 points on 37 percent shooting, but their offense could not match that success as they fell 52-39 to the Bobcats to complete the regular season.
Callie Cavanaugh led two Stags in double figures with 15 points. Between her and
Janelle Brown, the duo combined for 69 percent of the team's scoring.
The Stags used a 9-1 run in the third quarter to get back in the game and cut their deficit to five. Brown tallied six of the team's nine points during that run, becoming the first Stag in double figures.
After a Quinnipiac free throw, Cavanaugh continued the scoring run with a layup for her 10th points of the game and cut the deficit to four.
Kate Peek would complete the third quarter scoring with a deep 3-pointer to put the score at 33-28 heading into the final quarter.
The third quarter was Fairfield's best offensive stanza of the game as they tallied 14 in the quarter while hitting 33 percent of their shots.
Quinnipiac would extend their lead and the Stags would not come closer than five points the rest of the way.
The offensive success in the third quarter was not enough to overcome a low-scoring second quarter where the Stags shot 1-for-17 from the floor and tally two points. That allowed the Bobcats to grab a 10-point halftime lead.
That struggling stretch would extend to a 1-for-24 stretch as the Stags shot 18 percent in the first half.
Fairfield's defense was stifling all day as they held Quinnipiac to 37 percent shooting but could not find their offensive touch.
Cavanaugh led the Stags with her 25th double-digit scoring game of the season with 15 points. Brown also notched double figures with 12. Brown also led the defensive charge with three steals, tying
Izabela Nicoletti Leite for the team lead.
Fairfield will next head to Atlantic City, N.J., to defend their MAAC Championship crown beginning with the Quarterfinal round against fourth-seeded Siena on Thursday at 3:30pm.
