ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team's season came to an end in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Quarterfinals as they fell to the fourth-seeded Siena Saints 59-53 in the Quarterfinal round.
Callie Cavanaugh led the Stags with 18 points in her final game in a Stags uniform while
Janelle Brown added 12 and tied a team-high with seven rebounds.
"I'll start by saying that I'm gutted for this team," Head Coach Carly Thibault DuDonis said. "They've done everything that we asked. They've gotten better all year long, they've stuck together, they've brought energy. I truly feel we were right there and could win it all."
The Stags had led by six after the first basket in the fourth quarter, but a 10-0 run for the Saints over the next five minutes allowed Siena to regain the lead. Mackenzie Daleba stopped the scoring drought as she grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the second chance opportunity.
Daleba would grab another offensive board and convert another layup to tie the score at 49-49 with 5:05 remaining.
The Stags would tie the game again as
Lauren Beach went coast-to-coast after grabbing a defensive rebound and converted the layup to knot the score at 53-53 with 3:48 remaining.
That would be the last points for the Stags as Siena would end the game on a 6-0 run.
Fairfield held their largest lead of the game at 10 points after a pair of
Callie Cavanaugh free throws with 3:00 left in the third quarter. Siena, however, would get back in the game with six-straight points and trail by just four entering the final quarter.
In her final collegiate game, Cavanaugh led the Stags with 18 points to bring her career total to 1,095 as a Stag, the 29th most in program history. She also grabbed six boards and drew her 21st charge of the year.
Brown completed her breakout season with 12 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists. She nearly tripled her last season scoring output with 341 points this year.
Beach had a productive day with eight points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Daleba also had success in the final game of the season with six points and six rebounds.
The Stags end their season with a 15-15 overall mark in the first year of Coach Thibault-DuDonis. They had a pair of All-MAAC players in Cavanaugh and Brown who combined for 30 of the team's points in the setback.
