Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. --
Allie Bridgman struck out nine batters over five innings while Madison
Robicheau added three RBI to pace the Fairfield University softball team to an 10-2 win over Central Connecticut State University. The Stags posted runs in five of the seven innings including a five-run third inning that put Fairfield in control for most of the game.
The visitors opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second as Haley
Updegraff played a key role in the rally. The outfielder brought home the first run with a triple to right-center field and came home later in the frame after
Charli Warren reached first base off a bunt single. After Central Connecticut cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer, the Stags came back with their five-run inning to push the score to 7-2. Quinn
McGonigle brought home one run while
Robicheau laced a two-run single to highlight the Fairfield rally.
Fairfield continued to add runs to the scoreboard by earning a run in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. In the fourth frame, Kasey
Sekula and
McGonigle began the inning by each working out a walk to put runners on first and second. A force out at third base kept runners at first and second with one out, setting another
Robicheau RBI with her grounder to the left side of the infield. The fifth inning run occurred off back-to-back singles which started with a single and a stolen base by Morgan
Sylvestre followed by an RBI single from
Kaitlin Hoffman. Fairfield's final run was a result of Delaney
Whieldon's double with one out in the seventh inning and an RBI single by Anna
Paravati to brought the score to 10-1.
Bridgman enjoyed her finest pitching performance of the season with her season-best nine strikeouts in addition to scattering four hits to earn her second victory of the season.
Alyssa Weinberg entered the pitching circle for the final two innings and yielded no runs and just one hit. The freshman retired the final four batters she faced by strikeout including all three in the final inning.
"It was a good win for us today," Head Coach Julie
Brzenski said. "We were able to provide some of our younger players with good experience and they showed quality at-bats today. Allie did a great job on the mound and Alyssa came in and provided support to close out the game."
The Fairfield University softball team will continue play within in the state of Connecticut on Thursday when it travels to Sacred Heart University for a Thursday afternoon game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
