DELAND, Fla. – Every Stag starter recorded a hit and the pitching duo of
Kevin Kell and
Peter Ostensen held Stetson to one run as the Fairfield University Baseball team dominated a midweek contest with an 11-1 seven inning win over the Hatters. Along with the nine different players with a hit, seven different Stags scored or drove in a run.
"It was a good first start for the freshman
Kevin Kell," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "He kept them off balance with thre pitches and even picked off one of his few runners. Ostensen came in and threw the best four innings of the year for him to closed out the seven-inning shortened game. The hitters again pounded the ball and provided ample run support off a good lefty in Gonzales."
The Stags scored their first 10 runs on doubles as Fairfield hit six RBI two-baggers in the first five innings.
Matt Bucciero got the scoring started with a clutch at-bat in the fourth. The freshman, who batted .571 last week, took a two-out, two-strike pitch down the right field line, scoring
Charlie Pagliarini and
Noah Lucier.
Fairfield would then tally five RBI doubles and send 12 men to the plate in an eight-run fifth inning. Ironically, the frame started with a double as
Griffin Watson lined a ball to the right center field gap. Pagliarini would go the other way, lining a RBI double down the left field line to put the score at 3-0.
Matt Bergevin would immediately follow as he lined the first pitch he saw from the new Stetson pitcher down the left field line for a two-run double.
Mike Handal,
Nick Sturino, and
Mike Becchetti would all follow with run scoring doubles with Becchetti's capping the inning and giving Fairfield a 10-0 lead. The Stags would add a single run in the sixth on a Lucier RBI single.
The Stags also enjoyed their best pitching performance of the season as the duo of Kell and Ostensen combined for one run on four hits in eight innings. Kell threw the first 3.1 frames, allowing just two base runners through the first three innings. He ran into a jam in the fourth, as Ostensen entered in relief. Ostensen would get out of the jam by striking out his first batter before inducing a ground ball.
Ostensen would pick up his first win of the year after striking out four in 3.2 frames. Pagliarini, Bergevin, Lucier, and
Matt Venuto paced the Stags with a pair of hits. Becchetti, Sturino, Bergevin, and Bucciero tied for the team lead with two RBI.
Fairfield will finish their trip in Florida as they complete their quick two-game series at Stetson on Wednesday at 1pm.
