Stags End Florida Trip with Setback at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – The Fairfield University Baseball team completed their week-long stay in the state of Florida with a 7-5 setback at Stetson. Matt Bergevin paced the Stags offensively with three hits including a two-run homer in the first. On the mound, five different Stags recorded scoreless outings, led by Bowen Baker who tossed 1.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Bergevin's two-run home to center field put the Stags on the board early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the frame. The long ball was the third of the year for Bergevin, and the 24th for the team through the first 14 games. The 24 homers are the most in the MAAC and the 44th most in the country.

The lead would be short-lived as the Hatters scored the next four runs of the game, including tying the contest on a bases loaded walk to former Rider and Manhattan slugger David Bermudez.

The Fairfield bats came back alive in the fifth as they would grab the lead by putting up a three-spot in the inning. JP Kuczik and Griffin Watson started the inning with back-to-back singles. Mike Becchetti would bring home the first run with a RBI single up the middle. Charlie Pagliarini, the team's leading RBI producer, tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right. Bergevin would complete his three RBI day with a single up the middle, giving the Stags a 5-4 lead.

Stetson would regain the lead for good in the sixth as Landon Moran brought home two runs with a double. Bermudez would cap the scoring with a RBI single.

Fairfield would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh and ninth innings, but could not scratch across a run for the 7-5 final.

Baker led the nine different Fairfield pitchers with 1.2 perfect innings, striking out three of the five batters he faced. Ryan Taffe struck out two in a scoreless fourth. Ryan Smith struck out a pair in his 0.2 innings of work. Finally, Billy Fitzgerald and Bo Buckley rounded out the scoreless performances.

Bergevin led the Stags with three hits and three RBI while Becchetti tallied two hits and scored two runs.

Fairfield is back in action, and closer to home, this weekend when they compete in a three-game series at Fordham, starting on Friday at 3pm.
