Road Slate Wraps Up Sunday at Canisius

Fairfield eyes a sweep of the Golden Griffs

An updated PDF version will be posted and distributed to media on Saturday to reflect updated national statistics and rankings.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball concludes the Western New York and the road portion of the 2022-23 schedule on Sunday at Canisius. Opening tip-off from Buffalo is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.

LAST TIME OUT: NIAGARA 76, FAIRFIELD 68
A 12-2 run for Niagara over the first five minutes of the second half made up the difference for the host Purple Eagles in a 76-68 decision over Fairfield on Friday evening. The Stags were led by 17 points apiece from Allan Jeanne-Rose and TJ Long.

The 12-2 run for the Purple Eagles was the only prolonged stretch for either side as the teams primarily traded buckets throughout the contest. Jeanne-Rose and Long each shot 6-for-10 from the floor for the Stags and accounted for four of the club's nine three-pointers. Jalen Leach added eight points with Makai Willis and a returning Jake Wojcik each contributing seven.

To round out the scoring, Supreme Cook scored six – shooting 2-for-3 from the field and 2-for-3 from the stripe – with Caleb Fields and James Johns Jr. each adding a trey. Cook hauled in a game-high nine rebounds and Willis corralled five as the Stags were edged out on the boards by the Purple Eagles, 25-23.

THE CANISIUS COLLEGE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Canisius has won three of its last four games, with a one-point loss at The Mount as the lone setback, to move to 8-19 overall and 6-12 in the MAAC. Most recently, the Griffs knocked off visiting Saint Peter's, 66-53, on Friday evening.

Jordan Henderson leads Canisius on the offensive end with 13.8 points per game. Rookie sharpshooter Tahj Staveskie adds 12.0 points and a team-best 2.7 assists per contest. Jacco Fritz is the Griffs' top rebounder with 6.1 boards per game.

As a unit, Canisius ranks fourth in the MAAC with 70.4 points per game but slots 11th defensively, conceding 73.4 points per outing.

LAST MEETING
Jake Wojcik netted a 18 points to lead four players in double figures as Fairfield surged past visiting Canisius, 67-58, in front of a crowd of 3,219 at Mahoney Arena on Jan. 20. Supreme Cook recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-leading 12 rebounds.

Allan Jeanne-Rose also poured in 15 points, and Caleb Fields was the fourth Stag in double figures with 10.

In addition to Cook's dozen rebounds, Wojcik and Fields each hauled in five boards as the Stags gained a 34-29 victory on the glass. The Stags also won the turnover battle, 13-12.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Fairfield's four straight wins over the Griffs have moved the all-time series to 54-40 in favor of the Stags dating back to 1962. Fairfield has won seven of the last eight meetings coming off of a stretch in which the Griffs won four of five encounters. The Stags' most successful run was a streak of nine straight over Canisius from 2009-12. The Griffs also put together a stretch of nine consecutive wins in the series -- a run that was halted by Fairfield's victory in the 1997 MAAC Championship Game.

THE BUFFALO TRIP BY THE NUMBERS
This season marks Fairfield's 24th proper version of the MAAC "Buffalo trip" – playing both Niagara and Canisius on the same visit to Western New York.

Last season, the Stags came home with just the sixth sweep of that daunting road weekend in program history. Fairfield has swept the trip in three of the last six occurrences, also doing so in back-to-back seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

In addition to the six sweeps, Fairfield has gone 1-1 on the trek in eight seasons and has been swept nine times.

THE TWO POSSESSION LEAGUE
Coach Young has referred to the MAAC as the "ultimate two-possession league." This season, the Stags have had nine MAAC games decided by two possessions or in overtime, including six determined by just one possession (or in OT).

Of the nine games settled by more than two possessions and in regulation, six were within six points during the final three minutes.

UP NEXT
Fairfield returns home to wrap up the regular season on Thursday, March 2 against Quinnipiac. Opening tip on Senior Night is slated for 7:30 p.m. as the back-end of a Fairfield Basketball doubleheader.
