Stags Fall to Canisius in Opening Game of Western New York Trip

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team fell to the Canisius Golden Griffins 73-60 in the opening game of their Western New York trip. Kate Peek was one of two Stags to reach double figures in scoring as she notched a career-high 15 points and Andrea Hernangomez added 10 with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Stags scored 41 points in the second half, including 27 in the fourth quarter as they tried to rally from a 22-point first half deficit. Peek gave the Stags their biggest momentum as she knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers in a 20-second span to cut the deficit to seven with 3:20 left to play.

That would be the closest the Stags would get as Canisius would score six-straight points including four-straight free throws.

Peek scored 12 of her career-high 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Stags tallied 27 points while shooting 45 percent from the field. However, the Griffs would keep the pressure on the Stags as they shot 54 percent in the final quarter. Fairfield would also have an 8-0 run in the period with four-straight points from Callie Cavanaugh.

Fairfield trailed by 20 going into halftime as they struggled with their shot, shooting 24 percent from the field and 0-for-11 from behind the arc. The Stags improved in the second half by shooting 42 percent and hitting five 3-pointers.

Hernangomez, who made her first start in a month, neared a double-double with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Janelle Brown led the team with four assists. Three Stags notched three steals with Brown, Peek, and Hernangomez led a defensive effort that forced 22 turnovers.

The Stags will stay in Western New York to face Niagara on Sunday at 2pm.
