Stags Force Overtime but Falls to Niagara

LEWISTON, N.Y. – Janelle Brown connected on the game-tying 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the Niagara Purple Eagles would out-score the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team 12-3 in the extra period to take a 65-56 decision.

Brown's crucial 3-pointer was her third of the game as she went 3-for-4 from long range to lead the team with 15 points.

The Stags trailed by nine with under four minutes to go before beginning their rally. Andrea Hernangomez started the stretch with a lay-up to begin a 5-0 burst. After a Niagara free throw, the Stags would end regulation on a 7-2 run including buckets from Izabela Nicoletti Leite and Brown in the final minute.

Fairfield would actually score 22 points in the final quarter, out-scoring the Purple Eagles by seven in the frame.

The Stags also found momentum at the end of the first half as the squad built a 9-2 run to close within two at the break at 26-24. Once again, Brown was at the fore-front of that rally as she swished through a 3-pointer and also hit two free throws. Nicoletti-Leite also contributed to the run with four points.

Mimi Rubino and Callie Cavanaugh both neared double figures in scoring as both finished with nine.

Brown would also lead the team with four assists and four steals on the defensive side. Fairfield also out-rebounded Niagara 41-37, with Mackenzie Daleba leading the group with eight boards.

The Stags are back in action when they return to the Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Thursday night when they celebrate Senior Night against Marist at 7pm.
