NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will look to continue their momentum when they close out their weekend in Nashville, Tenn., as they battle SEC Vanderbilt on Sunday at 2pm EST. The contest will conclude the program's first-ever trip to the state of Tennessee and will continue their season-long five-game road trip.
The Stags have been 'Nashville' hot on both sides of the ball through the first two games of the season, ranking 19th in the country in scoring offense at 95.0 points per game and 11th in the nation in scoring defense allowing just 40 points per contest.
The Stags have netted 80 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
The offense has been fueled with their hot-shooting from behind the arc as the squad ranks third in Division I averaging 14.0 3-pointers per contest. That success was on full display during their victory at Lipscomb as the Stags connected on seven of their first eight attempts from deep, with three of those coming from
Meghan Andersen. The freshman duo of Andersen and
Kaety L'Amoreaux combined to hit nine 3-pointers with both rookies netting 20 or more points.
Andersen has been the team leader in scoring in both of her first two collegiate games as she is off to one of the best starts in school history. Against Lehman, she tallied a game-high 19 points, the most by a Fairfield freshman in their debut in over 30 years. She followed that performance with 23 points, six blocks, and five 3-pointers, the first freshman in the country to record those numbers against a Division I opponent since at least the 2009-10 season.
She is also the first player overall during that span to notch six blocks, nine rebounds, three assists, and hit five 3-pointers against a Division I opponent.
Along with Andersen and the offense the stifling Fairfield defense has also impressed their opponents as they have surrendered just 21 field goals through their first pair of games. They are allowing opponents to shoot at just a 21 percent clip, the fourth-lowest number in the country. They have accomplished this through a stifling defensive pressure that has forced 23.5 turnovers per game, ranking near the top-50 in the country.
That defensive pressure has kept their opponents out of their rhythm, allowing just three assists through the first 60 minutes of the season, and 10 overall.
Vanderbilt also brings a high-powered offense into the game that has averaged 83.0 points through the first two games, helping them to a 2-0 record. The Commodores have three players averaging double figures, led by Sacha Washington's 17.0.
The Stags will continue their five-game road trip, but much closer to home when they visit Rutgers on Monday, Nov. 20 at 7pm.
