FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team was blanked by the Canisius Golden Griffins by a 1-0 final score on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Lessing Field. The loss is Fairfield's second-straight setback and drops their conference record to 3-2.
Despite the final score, the Stags had the majority of opportunities, out-shooting the visitors 18-5 including by a 15-3 margin in the second half.
However, the only shot that mattered came in the 34th minute as Skylar Cornell snuck a shot past the keeper for the lone goal of the game.
Elle Scott had the best chance for the Stags in the 14th minute as her high-rising shot was tipped off the crossbar by Canisius goalkeeper Jordan Spencer, who also scooped up the rebound.
Fairfield also had a chance later on in the half with the ball right in front of the goal line but it was eventually cleared off the line by a Canisius defender.
Despite taking 15 shots in the final 45 minutes, only one attempt was on target with a Scott hard hit ball that was corralled by Spencer.
Reagan Klarmann had another good chance for the Stags but her header was deflected of the crossbar.
Fairfield out-shot a MAAC opponent for the 15th time in the last 16 matches dating back to last season. The Stags entered the match ranked 17th in the country in shots per game.
