RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team got back to their winning ways as they shutout the Manhattan Jaspers with a 1-0 victory on the road.
Sam Kersey tallied the game-winning goal in the 11th minute and the Fairfield defense worked hard to have that goal hold up, surrendering just three shots in the match.
"We played good soccer tonight," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "We moved the ball well and were solid defensively. We still need to be sharper in the final third but our chances were dangerous tonight. It's always good to get three points on the road."
Kersey's goal came off a feed from
Maddy Theriault in the 11th minute as Kersey tallied her fourth goal of the season, which is now the second most on the squad. Theriault recorded her fourth helper of the year, also the second most on the team.
The Fairfield defense worked hard for that goal to hold up as they dominated the contest allowing just three Manhattan shots, all of them coming in the second half.
The Stags would out-shoot Manhattan 14-3 in the contest including an 8-0 mark in the first half. Fairfield allowed just one of those attempts to be on target with Julia Nicholas' attempt stopped by
Katie Wright with just 28 seconds left in the match.
Fairfield would have 10 of their attempts on target with three in a six-minute span in the second half, but attempts from
Meghan Carragher,
Alex Darcy, and
Sydney Corbett all saved by the Manhattan goalkeeper.
Corbett, Kersey, and Theriault all tied for the match-high with two shots on target. With their shot total, the Stags have out-shot all their MAAC opponents this year and have out-shot their conference foes 16 times in the last 17 matches dating back to last season.
The Stags will stay on the road with a matchup against Marist on Saturday night at 7pm.
