Men's Soccer Hosts Quinnipiac Wednesday Night

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team will host Quinnipiac University on Wednesday night at Lessing Field, closing out its nine-match home slate. The Stags won their last two matches with victories over Iona University and Saint Peter's University, looking to equal a three-game win streak set earlier in the season. The match is slated for a 7 pm start.

About Fairfield
  • The Stags rallied with a goal in the 84th minute at Saint Peter's last Wednesday which led the team to its third road victory of the season. Fairfield finished the regular-season with a 3-3-1 record away from campus, one of five Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) teams to own a .500 or better road record. The Stags' home schedule has been formidable this year with three regionally ranked teams (Bryant, Harvard, and Iona) and a national-ranked team (#25 Bryant) this year.
  • William Pierce was responsible for the deciding goal against Saint Peter's, netting  his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The sophomore also ranks among the MAAC's top scorers, placing fourth for total goals, fourth in goals per game (0.40), and eighth in total points (12). His six goals are the most by a first-year Stag (non-transfer) since Don-Junior Bobe posted six goals in 2017 and second only to Jordan Ayris' 10-goal performance in his rookie campaign.
  • Goalkeeper James Anderson posted six saves in the team's win over Saint Peter's, the second time in his last four appearances that he has tallied that many stops in a match (vs. Marist). He has 15 saves in this four-match stretch, giving him a .714 save percentage against Marist, Siena, Iona, and Saint Peter's. For the year, Anderson owns a .735 save percentage off his 36 saves as well as a 1.34 goals against average.

About Quinnipiac
  • The Bobcats picked up a win in their last MAAC outing, a 3-1 decision over Niagara University at home. Quinnipiac owns a 1-1-2 record over its last four conference matches including draws with Mount St. Mary's and Saint Peter's. After being shutout in back-to-back games against Siena and Marist, the offense has combined for eight goals in its last four dates including seven in its last three dates.
  • Tomas Svecula has been a big part of the team's offensive resurgence with five goals over the last three games. Last week, he tallied two goals against Manhattan and followed with two more in the Niagara victory. For his effort, the graduate student was named the MAAC's Offensive Player of the Week. On the season, Svecula leads the team in scoring, posting team-highs with six goals and six assists for 18 points.
  • Karl Netzel handles the goalkeeping duties with 15 starts this season, posting a pair of shutouts (Rhode Island and La Salle). He has registered a 1.45 goals against average along with a .682 save percentage based on his 45 saves (3.0 per match) in 15 appearances.
