FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team moved into second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings with a dominant 2-1 victory over the Siena Saints on Lessing Field.
Meghan Carragher and
Reagan Klarmann touched net for the Stags who out-shot the visitors by a 30-9 margin.
"I thought the response was terrific," Head Coach
David Barrett, who earned his 50th victory at Fairfield said. "I was really impressed with our response and I thought we were dangerous the whole night. Being able to comeback when we were down one was very important for our psychology. I thought it showed a lot of character."
Despite out-shooting the Saints 19-3 in the first half, it was the visiting side who got on the board first as Julia Dening converted her goal-scoring opportunity off a corner kick to give Siena a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
The Stags would show that quick response that Coach Barrett raved about, earning a corner kick and tying the game less than one minute later.
Off the corner kick,
Elle Scott took the initial shot that was blocked and found the foot of Carragher who pushed the ball past the line for her first score of the season.
Fairfield would take the next 12 shots of the match, with Klarmann's strike in the 26th minute finding the back of the net for her third score of the campaign. The junior received a failed clearance from the defense and sent her shot past the keeper to give the Stags the lead.
Fairfield would have four shots on target in the second stanza with
Caroline Kelly's attempt being the closest and needing a team save to clear the chance. That clearance actually led to a Siena counter attack that nearly resulted in the game-tying goal, but the Siena midfielder missed her wide-open attempt high of the net.
The 30 shots were the second most by the Stags this season, just two shy of their conference opening victory against Mount St. Mary's. Fairfield has out-shot every conference opponent this season and 17 of their last 18 dating back to last year.
The Stags had 11 attempts on target with Siena's goalkeeper Brooke Boermeester making eight saves.
Fairfield will head out on the road to try and keep their second place position when they visit Iona on Saturday at 1pm.
