FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Jonathan Filipe, a forward with the Fairfield University men's soccer program from 2018-21, signed with the Hartford Athletic in the United Soccer League (USL). The announcement was made by the team on January 12.
Filipe joins the Connecticut-based franchise after playing for the New York Red Bulls II last season. He started 21 of his 32 appearances for New York last season, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist during his appearances. He returns to his home state with the Hartford Athletic signing as the forward/midfielder hails from Danbury, Conn.
Filipe joined the professional ranks after proving himself with the Stags program, finishing as one of the team's all-time leaders in every statistical category including goals scored (19), assists (9), and total points (47). He came off his best season as a member of the 2021 team, registering 10 goals and six assists for 26 points.
He posted two game-winning goals as a senior, the most since his three deciding scores during his rookie season. His accolades included an All-Rookie selection by the MAAC coaches as well as an All-MAAC second team nod in his senior season. His best single season with the Stags came as a senior when he posted 10 goals and six assists for 26 points.
The Hartford Athletic opens the 2023 season with a pair of road games, starting the campaign at Monterey Bay FC on March 11 and at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on March 18. The team returns home for their first games at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford.
